Hua Hin

Thailand's Royal Beach Town

Gulf Coast, 200km south of Bangkok

Our Verdict

Best for retirees who want a beach lifestyle, love golf, and value a large English-speaking expat community. Budget needs to be $480+/week.

Why Australians Love Hua Hin

Hua Hin has been attracting retirees for decades, and it's easy to see why. It has all the things that make Thailand great — warm weather, great food, friendly people, low cost of living — with the added bonus of a beach, excellent golf, and a well-established community of English-speaking expats.

Unlike the party towns of Pattaya or the tourist chaos of Phuket, Hua Hin has a more refined, relaxed character. It's where Thai royalty comes for holidays. That sets the tone — dignified, pleasant, unpretentious.

The Real Costs in 2026

A comfortable one-bedroom condo close to town runs ฿14,000–฿18,000 per month ($636–$818 AUD). Go slightly inland and you can find the same quality for ฿10,000–฿13,000.

Food is where you really notice the difference from Australia. A bowl of excellent noodles from a street stall costs ฿60 ($2.70). A proper sit-down Thai meal with beer at a local restaurant is ฿250–฿400 ($11–$18). Western food is available everywhere but costs more — expect ฿400–฿700 for a decent Western meal.

Monthly grocery shopping at the local Makro or Big C supermarket for basics (fruit, vegetables, eggs, chicken, rice) costs ฿3,000–฿5,000 ($136–$227). Import a few Australian favourites and you'll add another ฿1,000–฿2,000.

Getting Around

Hua Hin's biggest weakness is public transport. There are songthaews (shared trucks) along the main roads, but they're limited. Most long-term expats either rent or buy a motorbike (฿2,500–฿3,500/month to rent) or use Grab for daily trips.

Bangkok is 2.5 hours by car or bus — handy for big hospital visits, shopping, or catching international flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Expat Community

This is where Hua Hin really excels. The expat community is enormous — estimated at 10,000+ foreigners living here long-term. There are golf societies, hiking groups, social clubs, quiz nights, and dozens of restaurants and bars specifically catering to Western tastes.

English is widely spoken in the main tourist and expat areas. Finding a doctor, lawyer, or real estate agent who speaks excellent English is easy.

Is Your Australian Pension Enough?

On the standard single pension of ~$540–$560/week overseas, Hua Hin is workable but tight. You'll be spending most of your pension each week with little buffer. Adding even a modest superannuation drawdown of $200–$300/week changes this dramatically.

Our Verdict

Hua Hin is one of the best retirement destinations in Southeast Asia — but it's not the best choice if you're relying solely on a modest pension with no super. It rewards those with a little extra coming in. If budget is tight, consider Khon Kaen or Chiang Mai instead. If you have a comfortable income, Hua Hin is hard to beat.
