Bangkok

World-Class City Living at a Fraction of Western Prices

Central Thailand — Thailand's capital city

Our Verdict

Bangkok is genuinely world-class and exciting — but it's the most expensive city in Thailand. The pension alone is tight here. Works best with super top-up or for those who want city life above all else.

Bangkok Is Unlike Anywhere Else

Bangkok is one of the great cities of the world. It's chaotic and efficient at the same time. The food is extraordinary. The temples are beautiful. The nightlife is legendary. The shopping is incredible. The healthcare is world-class.

It's also the most expensive place to live in Thailand — though expensive is relative. A comfortable lifestyle in Bangkok costs roughly what a very modest lifestyle in Sydney costs.

The BTS and MRT — Bangkok's Game Changer

Bangkok's Skytrain (BTS) and subway (MRT) networks are the key to living well here. If you choose an apartment near a station, you can get around the entire city cheaply and efficiently without a car or taxi.

Fares run ฿16–฿60 per trip depending on distance. A monthly pass costs around ฿1,400. This makes inner Bangkok surprisingly affordable for daily transport.

The trick is choosing your neighbourhood based on BTS/MRT access first, price second.

The Healthcare Reason to Choose Bangkok

Many retirees with existing health conditions choose Bangkok specifically because of Bumrungrad International and Bangkok Hospital. These are genuinely world-class facilities — better equipped than most Australian hospitals for complex procedures.

If you have heart conditions, cancer history, or other complex health needs, being 20 minutes from Bumrungrad rather than 2.5 hours is a meaningful quality-of-life consideration.

Cost Reality for Australian Retirees

A comfortable lifestyle near the BTS in Bangkok costs ฿55,000–฿65,000 per month ($2,500–$2,955 AUD) — roughly $577–$682 per week. That exceeds the overseas pension of around $540–$560/week.

Bangkok on the pension alone is tight. Adding $200–$300/week from super makes Bangkok genuinely comfortable.

Our Verdict

Bangkok is best for retirees who genuinely want city life and who have either a super top-up or are comfortable with a tighter budget in exchange for world-class urban living.
